Chapter 1 Lesson 1 Flashcards
What does “PMC” stand for in the PMC Model?
P : Program
M : Metabolism
C : Container
What does “CER” stand for?
C : Claim
E : Evidence
R : Reasoning
What is “program” in the PMC model?
A set of genetic instructions used to build an organism used for reproduction
What is “metabolism” in the PMC model?
The process of consuming and using energy
What is “container” in the PMC model?
How the good bacteria gets in an organism, and it also keeps the bad out
What is “claim” in CER?
A conclusion that addresses the original question or problem about a phenomenon
What is “evidence” in CER?
Pieces of data that support our claim
What is “reasoning” in CER?
An explanation on how the data supports your claim
What is one example of an atom?
Carbon, Hydrogen, etc.
What is one example of an organism?
Bacteria, Humans, etc.
What is an example of a biosphere?
The Earth
Whats the difference between a population and a community?
A population is the members of the same species in a similar area, while community is a combination of all of the population in one area.
What does the PMC Model help us figure out?
Whether something is living or not
What is an organ system?
A group of organs that perform a function
What is a biome?
All of the similar ecosystems around the planet
What is the difference between evidence and reasoning?
Evidence is what supports your claim to argue that it is true while reasoning is your justification on how each piece of evidence supports the claim
Is this a valid claim?
A cat does not have nine lives.
Yes, it follows all of the criteria for a claim.
What is the biosphere?
All the ecosystems which make up the planet
What is an ecosystem?
All of the populations and abiotic factors in a certain area
What is a community?
All of the populations in an area
What is a population?
Animals of the same species that interact in the same area
What is an organism?
An individual living thing
What is an organ system?
A group of organs that perform a specific function
What is an organ?
A group of tissues that form a single unit
What is a tissue?
A group of cells that work together to do a task
What is a cell?
The smallest unit of life
What is an organelle?
Structures that perform jobs in cells
What is a molecule?
Multiple atoms bonded together
What is an atom?
The building block of chemical elements
What is the difference between organelle, organs , and organisms?
Organelle : Structures that perform jobs in cells
Organ : A group of tissues that form a singular unit
Organisms : An individual living thing
What is smaller, a kidney or an endoplasmic reticulum?
An endoplasmic reticulum
