Chapter 3 Lesson 1 Flashcards
What is the definition of Niche?
All of the biotic and abiotic resources a species uses, and what, where, when, and how they are being used
What is the definition of Mutalism?
A specific part of symbiosis where both species are gaining a positive effect
What is the definition of Commensalism?
A specific part of symbiosis where one species gains a positive effect, while it doesn’t affect the other
What is the definition of Parasitism?
A specific part of symbiosis where one species gains a positive effect and one gets a negative effect. When a parasite infects another species, slowly killing/harming
What is the definition of Predation?
A specific part of symbiosis where one species gains a positive effect and one gets a negative effect. When a species eats/kills another species, quickly killing/harming
What is the definition of Herbivory?
A specific part of symbiosis where one species gains a positive effect and one gets a negative effect. When a plant is getting eaten by another species.
What is the difference between a Realized Niche and a Fundamental Niche?
A realized niche is how much resources a species actually uses while a fundamental niche is the amount of resources a species could potentially use
What is the difference between Facultative and Obligatory?
Facultative is when species receive benefits from each other, but can live without the other species while obligatory is when species are entirely dependent on each other
What is likely to happen if the niches of two species overlap a little?
The species will either adapt to not share the same niche, or they will eventually become extinct
What is likely to happen if the niches of two species overlap a lot?
One or both species will soon become extinct
How can niche partitioning increase the biodiversity of a community?
It can allow species to share the same resources without dying out over time
What are some ways that species can partition their niches?
- Consuming different foods
- Living in different places in the ecosystem
What type of inter-specific interaction would this be?
A species of beetle gain nutrients from eating blueberries off of their bushes. This can sometimes give the blueberry bushes a disease that can wipe the whole population out in one season.
Parasitism (+/-)
What type of inter-specific interaction would this be?
Butterflies go to flowers to pollinate them so they can gain nutrients to live a healthy life. This can also help the flowers to grow strong and tall.
Mutulism (+/+)
What type of inter-specific interaction would this be?
A species of flies love to live in tigers fur. This helps support the flies reproduction, and their lives. It does not make a difference on the way the tiger lives.
Commensalism (+/0)
