What is motivation?
A
- psychological & social factors that impel a person to act & affect a person’s level of effort & persistence
- varies in direction & intensity

A
- a global theory of human motivation & development

What are the 3 fundamental needs of the self-determination theory?
A
- autonomy
- competence
- relatedness

What is autonomy?
A
- being self-determining & in control of our actions
- having independence

What is competence?
A
- feeling effective & capable when undertaking challenging tasks
- make changes to one’s behaviour & one’s environment
- to cope with specific problems

What is relatedness?
A
- the social nature of human beings & the connectedness with others
- i.e., to feel connected with others

What is intrinsic motivation ?
A
- activity is undertaken because it is enjoyable , interesting, stimulating, or self-rewarding
- allows for curiosity, exploration , & the desire to master optimal challenges

What is extrinsic motivation ?
A
- activities are performed because they will get something out of it

What is amotivation ?
A
- means the absence of motivation
- individuals perceive no connection between their actions & the outcomes that occur with it

What is external regulation?
A
- activities are performed to fulfil an external demand, achieve a reward, or avoid punishment

What is Introjected regulation ?
A
- activity is engaged in to avoid negative emotions
- partial internalization of behaviour
- don’t like it, but obligated to do it

What is identified regulation ?
A
- activity is linked to important & valued goals
- i.e., an athlete training/practicing because he knows it will better his performance, but not because he likes to do it

What are intrinsic motives?
A
- to learn; something new about the activity
- accomplish tasks; obtain a sense of accomplishment
- experience sensations; experience the pleasant sensations of the activity

Are intrinsic motives or extrinsic motives better?
A
- 2 groups were assessed; one using extrinsic motives & the other using intrinsic motives
- results found:
- the autonomy group was more involved in physical activity
- Enjoyed physical activity more
- Had a more positive attitude about physical activity
- Perceived they had more personal control over physical activity
