Second Vatican Council
Meeting of Catholic leaders that resulted in many reforms including the use of local language over Latin in church so that the church could renew its appeal and democratize.
New Left
Movement that emphasized the new Marxism that challenged western capitalism and Soviet communism.
Brezhnev Doctrine
A doctrine that stated that the Soviet Union had the right to step in the East Bloc countries if they thought it was necessary to keep the Communist rule.
OPEC (organization of the petroleum exporting countries)
Arab led organization of the petroleum exporting countries.
stagflation
Term to describe the low growth and high inflation that eventually led to a worldwide recession in the 1980’s.
postindustrial society
Society that didn’t rely on heavy industry for economic growth but high tech and service oriented instead.
neoliberalism
1980’s philosophy of conservatives who fought for decreasing government spending on services and privatization of state-run industries.
privatization
Transferring major industries into private control to increase private profits in response to the 1970’s economic crisis.
developed socialism
A term to describe socialist accomplishments of the societies used by Communist leaders. Includes nationalized industry, social welfare, and collective agriculture.
Solidarity
Polish trade union workers fighting for workers’ rights and political reform in the 1980’s.
perestroika
Premier Mikhail Gorbachev’s economic restructuring and reform in the Soviet Union in 1985.
glasnost
Gorbachev’s campaign for openness in the media and in the government.
Velvet Revolution
Term to describe the peaceful overthrow of Czechoslovakia’s communism . Label signified the East Bloc collapse 1989-1990
