Cold War
Rival between Soviet Union and United States that caused a major divide in Europe into a Soviet-aligned Communist bloc and US capitalist bloc. 1945-1989.
displaced persons
Refugees postwar. 13 million Germans former Nazi prisoners, laborers, and children.
Truman Doctrine
Policy made by America to contain communism to the countries under Soviet control.
Marshall Plan
American plan to help western Europe rebuild by providing economic aid and support.
Council for Mutual Economic Assistance COMECON
An organization of Communist states that helped rebuild the east bloc that was under Soviet patronage.
NATO
North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Anti Soviet military group of the Western governments.
Warsaw Pact
Soviet supported military alliance made up of the East Bloc countries in Europe.
Economic miracle
A term describing major economic growth that was based off of consumer sector. Post WW2 in western Europe.
Christian Democrats
Political parties that came to power in west Europe after WW2. Leaned toward the right side but more in the middle than other political parties.
Common Market
In search for European unity, the six western and central European West Bloc countries made the European Economic Community in 1957.
socialist realism
An artistic movement that followed Communist ideals that were enforced by state control in the Soviet Union and East Bloc 1950’s and 1960’s.
de-Stalinization
Loosening of the Stalin S.U. that was lead by Nikita Khrushchev.
decolonization
The reversal of Europe’s overseas expansions caused by things like colonized people, declining power of the nations, and promises of freedoms by U.s and S.U. in the postwar.
nonalignment
A policy created by postcolonial governments to stay neutral during the Cold War so they could get whatever they could from both sides.
neocolonialism
Postcolonial system that preserved Western economic uses in the former colonial territories.
