Caravel
A small three-masted ship that gave the Portuguese an advantage in trade and exploration.
Ptolemy’s Geography
Synthesized the knowledge of geography and added latitude and longitude to help cartographers create more accurate maps.
Treaty of Tordesillas
Agreement to give Spain everything west of the Atlantic and give Portugal everything to the east.
Mexica Empire
A large Native American civilization in Mexico and central America that had advanced technologies and knowledge. They were also known as the Aztec empire.
Inca Empire
The vast Peruvian empire in the capital city of Cuzco. Its peak was from 1438-1532.
Viceroyalties
The name of the four administrative units that had Spanish possessions in New Spain, Peru, New Granada, and La Plata.
Ecomienda system
Where the Spanish leader allowed conquerors to forcibly work Indians in turn for food, shelter, and Christian teaching for the Indians.
Columbian Exchange
From the Old World to the New Worlds exchanging animals, plants and diseases.
