logical positivism
A philosophy that only beliefs that can be empirically proven are correct. Rejected traditional philosophy from God to meaning of happiness.
existentalism
Stresses the meaninglessness of existence and the importance of the search of moral values in the uncertain world.
theory of special relativity
Albert Einstein’s theory that only the speed of light is constant and time and space are relative to the observer.
id,ego,and superego
Freudian that describe the three parts to the self and the basics of behavior which he saw as irrational.
modernism
Label given to the cultural and artistic movements of the 19th and 20th centuries that challenged traditional artistic forms and radical experiments.
functionalism
Principal that building should serve as well as they could for the purpose they were made for without over-doing it.
Bauhaus
German school of fine and applied arts that brought together many great minds like theatrical innovators, designers etc.
Dadaism
Artistic movement of the 20’s and 30’s that attacked all standards of art and behavior in a outrageous conduct.
stream-of-consciousness- technique
A literary technique that uses interior monologue and explore the human psyche. Used by James Joyce, Virginia Wolf and many others.
“modern girl”
Stereotypical image of a modern independent woman in the 1920’s.
Dawes Plan
A war agreement that reduced Germany’s yearly payments, granted large U.S loans to recover, and made payment dependent on the state of the economy.
Great Depression
Worldwide depression from 1929 to 1939. Destroyed the economy and had a slow recovery with major loss.
Popular Front
New-deal inspired alliance in France that led the union movement and launched social reform that was far-reaching.
