Peace of Westphalia
These treaties finished out the Thirty Years’ War and established the end of large religious violence in Europe.
Fronde
Many violent uprisings during Louis XIV’s reign created by growing taxation and control.
Mercantilism
An economic regulation system wanting to increase power by wealth of gold and silver.
Peace of Utrecht
1713-1715 treaties that ended the War of Spanish Succession, ended the expansion of France throughout Europe, marking the rise of the British Empire.
Junkers
The nobility and landowning classes that dominated the Brandenburg and Prussia estates.
Boyars
Highest ranked members of the Prussian nobility.
Cossacks
Outlawed armies and free people that comprised peasants. By the late 16th century they had an alliance with the Russian state.
Sultan
Ottoman Empire ruler who owned all the land and had highly trained slaves to run it.
Janissary Corps
The core of the sultan’s army made up of the conscripts of non- muslim areas of the empire that later became a volunteer force.
Millet System
A system where millets (nations) would enjoy self-government under its leaders divided by the Ottomans.
Constitutionalism
A form of government where power is separated by law and balance between the power of the authority of the government.
Republicanism
A form of government where the power is left up to the people and their elected representative.
Puritans
Members of the 16th and 17th century Church of England reform that wanted to purify Roman Catholic elements.
Protectorate
The military dictatorship established by Oliver Cromwell in 1653- 1658
Test Act
A legislation passed by Parliament in 1673 to protect the position of the Anglican Church by taking away the right to vote, preach, assemble, teach or study at a university from the dissenters.
