Estates General
A legislative body made up of representatives from each class (estates) in prerevolutionary France.

Three legal categories of France’s people. The clergy, the nobility, and everyone else.
National Assembly
Representatives from the third estate, nobility and clergy that made up the first French revolutionary legislature.
Great Fear
The fear of the nobles and peasants fighting that led to more revolt and the seize of the French countryside.
Jacobin Club
Well -educated radical republicans in a political club during revolutionary France.
second revolution
The second half of the revolution that involved the fall of the French monarchy that introduced the fast radicalization of politics.
Girondists
A group that fought for control over the French National Convention.
the Mountain
The French National Convention’s faction, led by Robespierre, that seized legislative power in 1793.
sans - culottes
The poor French laborers that were called this because they wore different clothes than the middle class. The word later referred to militant radicals.
Reign of Terror
Where Robespierre’s Public Safety Committee would execute thousands that they suspected of treason. New culture was imposed
Thermidorian reaction
Reaction to the violence of the Reign of Terror which resulted in loosened economic controls and the execution of Robespierre.
Napoleonic Code
The code that reasserted the principles of the equality of male citizens and restricted rights accorded to women.
Grand Empire
The empire that took over all of Europe except for Russia and Great Britain ruled by Napoleon and his allies.
Continental System
A blockade that Napoleon enforced to stop all trade to Britain that resulted in weakened British military and economy.
