Chapter 23 Questions Flashcards
Contrast ectothermic and entothermic.
Ectothermic- control temp from outside.
Entothermic- control temp from inside.
Contrast poikilothermic and homeothermic animals.
Poikilothermic- different temperature.
Homeothermic- constant temperature.
How do poikilotherms modify effects of the environment on their temperature?
Poikilotherms modify temp by behavior.
Describe three major body plans of animals.
- Asymmetrical- develop fits to environment.
- Radial Symmetry- no true “head end”
- Bilateral Symmetry- in higher animals contain brain, have gut tube.
Compare advantages and disadvantages of life in the ocean.
Advantages: no dehydration, no temperature extremes, ionic concentration like cells.
Disadvantages: limited light, hard to stay in place due to waves & current, hard to find mate if your sessile.
Which phyla of animals have adapted to both land and water.
Mammals.
Describe the specializations for parasitic life.
- Find a host.
- Resist being expelled.
- Don’t kill host.
- Attach to hold on.
Describe three types of fish that occupy pelagic niches.
- Jawless fish.
- Jaws but no bones.
- Bones and swim bladder.
Which phylum occupies the greatest number of land habitats?
Arthropods
What were the first vertebrates on land? What adaptations and limitations did these animals show?
Amphibians.
Can live on land, but need to go back to water to reproduce.
