Chapter 13 Flashcards
Natural Selection
A primary process that brings about evolution by selecting which individuals will survive, reproduce, and pass on their genes to the next generation.
Evolution
A change in the frequency of genetically determined characteristics within a population over time.
Characteristics of an organism gained during its lifetime, not determined genetically and therefore not transmitted to the offspring.
Acquired Characteristics
The gene mixing that occurs during sexual reproduction.
Genetic Recombination
Factors that affect the probability that a gene will be passed to the next generation.
Selecting Agent
The appearance of an allele in the phenotype of an organism.
Gene Expression
Genetic selection through ability to survive.
Differential Survival
Genetic selection through reproductive success.
Differential Reproductive Rate
Genetic selection through ability to survive.
Differential Mate Selection
