Chapter 2 Atoms and elements Flashcards
What is an element
substance that cannot be broken down any further
substance containing atoms with the same atomic number or proton number
Groups
Columns in the periodic table with groups of atoms with similar properties. Same number of valence electrons.
Periods
Rows in the periodic table with the same number of electronic shells.
Compounds
Made of different atoms and elements that have been bonded together
Mixtures
Different substances that haven’t been bonded together
Proton, neutron, electron mass and charge. What are these particles called
Mass: 1, 1, 0
positive charge, none, negative charge
Subatomic particles
Proton number
Number of protons in a nucleus. aka atomic number
Nucleon number
Mass number, total number of protons and neutrons of an atom.
Electronic configuration
The arrangement of electrons in an atom.
Electron shells
electrons are arranged in shells.
Isotopes
how do properties differ
Atoms with the same protons and electrons, but a different number of neutrons. All the isotopes of one electron will have the same chemical properties
Relative atomic mass
Average mass of its isotopes compared to 1/12th the mass of an atom of carbon-12
what happens to the particles of a metal when it is hammered into shape
particles slide over eachother
how does melting point of pure substance differ from impure
melts at a higher temp
sharp melting/specific melting point
how does boiling point of a pure substance differ from impure
boils at a lower temp
