Chapter 16 Flashcards
Chronic Health Conditions
arteriosclerosis
hardening or loss of elasticity of arteries
atherosclerosis
buildup of fatty plaques in arteries that leads to narrowing/reduced blood flow
peripheral vascular disease
group of diseases in which blood vessels become restricted or blocked- usually a result of atherosclerosis
obesity
condition of subcataneous fat exceeding lean body mass
diabetes
chronic metabolic condition caused by insuling deficiency (impairs carbohydrate usage and enhances use of fat and protein)
hypertension
elevated arterial blood pressure likely to induce cardiovascular or end-organ damage
valsalva maneuver
exhale forcibly with windpipe so no air exits through mouth or nose (when lifting heavy weight), impedes return of venous blood to heart
osteopenia
decrease in calcification or density of bone
osteoporosis
decrease in bone mass and density as well as space between bones, resulting in porosity and fragility
arthritis
chronic inflammation of joints
osteoarthritis
arthritis in which cartilage becomes soft, things out as a result of trauma or other conditions
rheumatoid arthrities
primarily affecting connective tissues where there is a thickening of articular soft tissue and extension of synovial tissue
restrictive lung disease
condition of fibrous lung tissue, decreased ability to expand lungs
chronic obstructive lung disease
condition of altered airflow through lungs, caused by airway obstruction as a result of mucus production
intermittent claudication
manifestation of symptoms caused by peripheral arterial disease
