Chapter 15 - Fire Attack Flashcards
How many times does water expand?
1700
Describe transitional attack?
an offensive at initiated by exterior indirect handline ops, into the fire compartment, to initiate cooling while transitioning into interior direct fire attack in coordination with ventilation ops
Why use fog nozzles?
Fog streams can be adjusted to suit diff circumstances and diff amounts of water
they absorb more heat then solid streams and aid in ventilation
What is the primary nozzle on the EFD and what is its flow?
Akron 4817, 44mm Assault Nozzle
550 LPM @500 kPa
What are master stream appliances? and types?
A master stream appliance is a large caliber device used prime for defensive strategies. Types are portable, fixed and elevated fixed.
what can cause a defective stream?
Insufficient pressure
too much pressure
defective tip (nozzle)
air in line
twist in hose near pipe
list 6 guidelines to follow before entering a structure?
make sure both the nozzle person and the backup ff are on the same side of the hoseline.
check exterior door for heat and be alert to possible backdraft or flashover
ensure ventilation is ready to be setup
bleed air from charged hose before entering
ensure you have right nozzle pattern
stay low and try not to block ventilation openings
What should attack team do outside while waiting to advance?
bleed off any air in hose and test pattern and stream range in prep
size up structure
list guideline for attacking an enclosed structure fire?
Approach and attack fire from the unburned side to prevent fire spread.
keep low
stay to the side of entrances
do not open the hose nozzle until u encounter fire unless u need a protective stream
use penciling to control atmosphere
direct the stream at the base of a localized fire
use a fog stream only if adequate vent has been achieved
if u must back out of an area, keep the fire stream operating until everyone is in a safe area
use your senses to pick out signals from the environment
list guideline for hose line selection?
fire load
type of mat/ fuel involved
volume of water required to ex the fire
hose reach required
number of ff available
4 indicators fire stream has been applied properly?
darkening down
white smoke/steam
decreased vis
rapid temp flux
list some concerns with garage fires?
fire load and contents
attached/ detached
access
proximity to exposures
6 guidelines for attacking a vehicle fire?
stage emerg vehicle away from hazards
identify if vehicle has TDG placards - is hazmat necessary
attempt to position hoseline between vehicle and exposures
attempt to approach upwind and uphill
approach vehicle from the corners (45 degree angle)
ex fire near occupants
ex any ground fires
ex remainder of fire
insure adequate water supply
foam application may be necessary
gain access quickly and efficiently - try before you pry
