Chapter 12 - Water Supply Flashcards

1
Q

List the disadvantages of water?

A

high surface tension. reduces rate of heat absorption

reacts with certain materials

low opacity and low reflectivity does not prevent radiant heat well

low viscosity, does not adhere well to vert surfaces

conducts electricity

steam from water can cause injurys

Q

describe use of dry barrel hydrants?

A

used in cold climates. the operating valve is at the base of the barrel below the frost line. the barrel also has a drain valve system to expel water when it is not in use. When in use the drain valve is closed when the hydrant is off the drain valve is opened

Q

what is water hammer?

A

Q

big gate duties?

A

safely dismount w/ all ppe and radio

remove hydrant gate from rear

wrap 125mm hose around hydrant

stand on hose, signal small gate

when app is stopped or it is safe, remove steamer cap

inspect barrel of hydrant and connect gate

ensure drain valve is open

radio driver or sector officer that u are ready to turn on hydrant

open hydrant when ordered by driver or sect officer, close drain valve

gather tools, remove kinks and report to officer for reassignment

17
Q

small gate duties?

A

safely dismount w/ ppe and radii

if riding new smeal pump, open coffin doors, parking break must be engaged

retrieve hydrant kit from driver rear compartment

place kit near hydrant practical local for big gate

help big gate with supply line, wait for rdy signal

return to app and relay rdy signal to driver and officer

at the scene, safe dismount, uncouple supply line at nearest joint

attach supply line to appropriate app at scene

if located at intake connection, open intake drain valve

communicate to driver that line is rdy

report to officer for reassignment
