Chapter 13.3.1 (Exam 3) DNA Replication Flashcards
DNA Is Replicated Semiconservatively
What are the three steps in DNA replication?
Initiation
Elongation
Termination
What is initiation in replication?
double helix is unwound, making two template strands
What is elongation in replication?
addition of complementary base pairs linked by phosphodiester bonds
What is termination in replication?
DNA synthesis ends when all DNA regions have been replicated
What are the monomers that are added to DNA during elongation?
deoxyribonucleoside triphosphates (dNTPs)
Which end are the dNTPs added to?
3’ end
What bond is formed between two nucleotides?
Phosphodiester bonds
What provides the energy for the formation of phosphodiester bonds?
Release of phosphates from dNTPs
When does DNA replication start?
DNA replication starts when a large protein complex (pre-replication complex) binds to a region called origin of replication (ori)
What happens during DNA replication in E. coli?
In E. coli, DNA is unwound and replication proceeds in both directions, forming two replication forks
