substance related disorders?
- abuse of drugs that people take to alter the way they think, feel and behave
Impulse control disorders?
- inability to resist acting on a drive or temptation
Psychoactive substances?
- alter mood or behaviour
Substance intoxication?
- physiological response to ingested substances
Substance abuse?
- how significantly the substance interfere with the users life
Substance dependence?
- enslaved by the drug, physiologically dependent on the drug, will exp withdrawal when abstained
Psychological dependence?
- desperate need to ingest the drug…likelihood one will return to use after abstinence…(behaviours )
Depressants?

- behavioural sedation and can induce intoxication
alcohol, sedative, hypnotic and anxiolytics
Stimulants?
ex?
- more active and alert…can elevate mood
cocaine, amph, nicotine and caffeine
Opiates?
ex?
- analgesia temporarily and euphoria
heroin, codeine, morphine etc
Hallucinogens?
ex?
- alter sensory perception and can produce delusions, paranoia and hallucinations
( marijuana and LSD)
Other drugs of abuse?

- do not fit into any one category
- anabolic steroids, inhalants…
Withdrawal delirium is caused by what?
- chronic alcohol abuse
- frightening hallucinations and body tremors
Wernike-Korsakoff Syndrome
- chronic alcohol abuse
- confusion, loss of muscle coordinative and unintelligible speech
Fetal Alcohol syndrome?
- fetal growth retardation, cognitive deficits, behaviour problems and learning issues
- caused via drinking while prego
Barbiturates (sedatives etc)
relax muscles and can produce mild feelings of well being
Benzodiazepines? (sedatives etc)
- calm and induce sleep….anticonvulsant
Amphetamine intoxication?
- euphoria, affective blunting, changes in sociability, interpersonal sensitivity, anxiety, tension, anger, stereotyped behaviours impaired judgement etc
Nicotine disorders?
- only list withdrawal symptoms
L> depressed mood, insomnia, irritability, anxiety, diff concentrating, restlessness, increased appetite and weight gain.
Cannabis intoxication?
- mood swings, euphoria, impaired motor coordination, anxiety, slowed time, blood shot eye, big appetite, dry mouth tachycardia
Hallucinogen intoxication?
- perceptual changes subjective intensification of perceptions depersonalization hallucinations, pupillary dilation, rapid heart beat, sweating and blurred vision.
Intermittent explosive disorder? (impulse)
- agressive impulses that result in assaults or destruction of property
Kleptomania?(impulse)
- recurrent failure to resist urges to steal things that are not needed for personal use or their monetary value
Pyromania? (impulse)
- irresistible urge to set fires.
Pathological gambling? (impulse)
- most common
- withdrawal…restless periods and irritability when attempting to stop
Trichotillomania? (impulse)
urge to pull one’s own hair out
