chap 5 key terms Flashcards
anion
Anion- a negatively charged ion, e.g. chloride ion, Cl-
aqeuous
containing water
brittle
Brittle- shatters when given a sharp tap.
cation
Cation- a positively charged ion.
chemical formula
Chemical formula- a representation of a substance using symbols for its constituent elements. It shows the ratio of atoms present in the substance.
crystal lattice
Crystal lattice- the symmetrical 3D arrangement of atoms or ions inside a crystal.
dissolve
Dissolve- To incorporate a solid or gas into a liquid so as to form a solution.
electrolyte
Electrolyte- a solution or molten substance that conducts electricity by means of the movement of ions, e.g. a solution of sodium chloride.
electron transfer diagram
Electron transfer diagram- a diagram that show electrons move from a metal atom to a non-metal to form ions.
electrovalency
the charge of an ion
empirical formula
Empirical formula- a formula that shows the simplest whole number ratio of the elements in a compound.
full equation
Full equation- a representation of a reaction that uses formulas.
gemstone
Gemstone- a precious stone that is usually ionic in structure.
ionic bonding
Ionic bonding- a type of chemical bonding that involves the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions.
ionic bonding model
Ionic bonding model- a description of the 3D lattice arrangement of positive and negative ions for an ionic compound in the solid state. The model helps to explain the properties of ionic compounds.
