Bone Marrow (BM) End of Unit 1
List 2 clinical conditions that would indicate the need for BM studies?
Hematologic Diseases and Systemic Disease
What is an example of a hematologic disease?
Anemia, Erythrocytosis, Polycythemia,
Leukopenia.
If someone had a hematologic disease, what would the appearance of their cells in PB circulation be?
Abnormal or Immature cells
Examples of Systemic Disease?
Solid malignant tumors elsewhere in the body, Infections known as fevers of unknow origin (FUO), Histiocytic diseases.
Adult BM aspiration sites in adults?
Posterior Superior Iliac Crest
Ocassionally Sternum or Anterior Iliac Crest.
<2yrs old site of BM aspiration?
Anterior tibia
Older children, but younger than adolescence BM aspiration site?
Sines of the lumbar vertebral
Specimen preparation for examination?
Make direct smear from aspirate
Make crush smear from BM spicules
Place extra into anti-coag tubes
Laboratorian roles during BM aspiration?
Provide equipment and perform the preliminary exam and processing.
Needle used for BM aspiration?
Jamshidi Trephine needle 8 or 11 gauge.
M:E Ratio
The myeloid and erythroid cell ratio between all Grans and their precursors and all NRBC precursors.
What part of the specimen does hitology get to process?
Clot in the syringe and the biopsy
Who receives the other specimens obtained(I.E. viral, fungal, or routine culture specimens)?
Microbiology
Paperwork and package specimens are sent out to?

The direct apsirate smear from the syringe is evaluated for?
Cell Morph W/ Wright’s Stain.
