Ch9 Key Terms - Airway Management Flashcards
The natural passageway that allows air to enter and exit the lungs.
Airway
A manually operated resuscitator consisting of an oxygen reservoir, a self-expanding squeezable bag, a
one-way valve, a universal adaptor, and a face mask; used to assist patient ventilations.
Bag-valve mask (BVM)
A personal protective device that provides a nonporous layer between the provider and the patient to prevent the transmission of communicable diseases.
Barrier device
A thin, leaf-shaped structure posterior to the tongue; covers the larynx when swallowing, preventing food or liquid from entering the airway.
Epiglottis
The act of expelling breath or air out of the lungs.
Exhalation
A clear, usually rectangular, plastic sheet that includes a mouthpiece through which rescue breaths are administered.
Face shield
A method of clearing the airway when a foreign body is seen in the mouth of an unresponsive patient
Finger sweep
A device on oxygen cylinders used to control and measure the flow of oxygen.
Flowmeter
Inflation of the stomach with air; can lead to vomiting.
Gastric distention
A method used to open the airway when there is a possible cervical spine injury.
Head tilt—chin lift maneuver
The act of drawing breath or air into the lungs.
Inhalation
The primary technique used to open a patient’s airway, where the jaw is moved forward.
Jaw-thrust maneuver
An oxygen delivery device consisting of plastic tubing with two open prongs that are inserted into the patient’s nostrils; provides low-flow oxygen when connected to an oxygen source.
Nasal cannula
A trumpet-shaped airway adjunct made from soft rubber or silicone inserted into the nostril to maintain a patent airway_
Nasopharyngeal airway (NPA)
An oxygen delivery device that has a mask, a one-way flow valve, and a reservoir bag; when connected to an oxygen source, provides a high concentration of supplemental oxygen
Nonrebreather mask
