A tear in the abdominal wall exposing the intestines and/or other organs to the external environment.
Abdominal evisceration
An injury to the pelvis and the internal organs between the genitals and anus that results when a patient forcefully straddles a fixed object.
Straddle injury
The site on the anterior pelvis at which the two pubic bones are joined together.
Symphysis pubis
Ballooning of an artery that weakens it and predisposes it to rupture.
Aneurysm
Development of a leak in the largest blood vessel in the body; results in massive bleeding that is usually fatal.
Aortic rupture
A chest injury without penetration of the chest cavity.
Closed chest injury
Sudden cardiac death due to blunt chest trauma without any observable chest or cardiac damage.
Commotio cordis
A condition in which two or more adjacent ribs are fractured in two or more places, causing a tree-floating segment (paradoxical movement) of the chest wall.
Flail chest
Term for Coughing up blood.
Hemoptysis
An accumulation of blood in the pleural space.
Hemothorax
A bruise of the heart muscle.
Myocardial contusion
A chest injury that involves penetration of the chest wall.
Open chest injury (sucking chest wound)
Inward movement of a flail chest segment upon inhalation.
Paradoxical motion
The accumulation of blood or other fluid within the pericardial sac.
Pericardial tamponade
The accumulation of pressurized air within the pleural space; causes the displacement of the great vessels, tracheal deviation, distention of the jugular veins, and compression of the other lung.
