A condition of sudden onset of pain within the abdomen, usually indicating peritonitis; immediate medical or surgical treatment is necessary.
Acute abdomen
A condition in which bacteria enter the bladder, potentially causing a serious infection with fever and chills.
Bladder infection
A condition in which the fertilized egg attaches outside of the uterus.
Ectopic pregnancy
An involuntary action in which the abdomen becomes rigid upon examination
Guarding
Vomit that contains blood in it
Hematemesis
A dull, yellow color of the skin, whites of the eyes, and mucous membranes caused by an excess of bilirubin; usually indicates liver disease.
Jaundice
Stools that appear black and tarry due to digested blood in the bowel.
Melana
A fluid-filled sac or pocket in an ovary or on its surface.
Ovarian cyst
A painful condition in which the pancreas becomes inflamed.
Pancreatitis
An infection of the organs of a women’s reproductive system
Pelvic inflammatory disease
A membrane that covers the organs of the abdomen and also lines the inner wall of the abdominal cavity.
Peritoneum
Inflammation of the peritoneum of the abdominal cavity, typically caused by leakage of hollow organ contents; usually worse if caused by bacteria from inside the intestines.
Peritonitis
Pain that originates in one part of the body but is felt in another part of the body.
