The complete or nearly complete separation of a body part or limb.
Amputation
The incomplete separation of the soft-tissue layers where the injured tissue is left dangling as a flap.
Avulsion
A strip or roll of gauze or other material used for wrapping or binding a body part.
Bandage
A Lesion of the skin caused by thermal or frictional neat, chemicals, electricity, or nuclear radiation
Burn
A condition in which the swelling of injured muscles within their connective tissue coverings causes pressure that can damage tissue and cut off blood flow.
Compartment syndrome
A dressing that closes bleeding blood vessels by compressing the wound.
Compression (pressure) dressing
A compression injury in which a great amount of force is applied to the body.
Crush injury
Any material (preferably sterile) used for covering and protecting a wound.
Dressing
A bruise; discoloration of the skin associated with a closed wound; signifies bleeding within the skin
Ecchymosis
Massive blood loss resulting in death; the process of bleeding to death.
Exsanguination
A localized collection of blood inside the body that has leaked from a blood vessel.
Hematoma
The escape of blood from the vessels; bleeding.
Hemorrhage
A foreign object that remains in the body in a puncture wound.
Impaled object
A cut caused by a sharp object; has clean, smooth edges.
Incision
A cut caused by forces that tear or crush the skin; tends to have jagged edges.
Laceration
The linings of body cavities and passages that are in direct or indirect contact with the outside environment
Mucous membranes
A dressing made of Vaseline gauze, aluminum toil, or plastic wrap that prevents air and liquids from entering or exiting a wound.
Occlusive dressing
An injury that is caused by a pointed object that penetrates the skin.
Puncture
Rest, ice, splint, elevate, the sequence of actions that providers should take when caring for contusions.
RISE
An injury caused by a hot liquid or a hot, moist vapor.
Scald
A painful collection of blood under a nail.
Subungual hematoma
An instrument that when tightened around an arm or leg temporarily arrests the flow of blood through a large artery.
Tourniquet
A sterile, soft, highly absorbent, individually wrapped dressing that provides superior padding and protection for major wounds, usually measures 9 inches by 36 inches; also called trauma dressing.
