Ch27&28 Key Terms - Plant, Animal and Altitude Related Emergencies Flashcards
A biological material (antibodies) administered to a patient to counteract exposure to a specific kind of venom; produced by injecting the venom into an animal and then harvesting the antibodies that the animal makes against the venom
Antivenom
Poisonous effects caused by bites or stings.
Envenomation
Death of most or all the cells in an organ or tissue due to disease, injury, or failure of the blood supply.
Necrosis
Any substance that can cause severe organ damage or death if ingested, inhaled, injected into the body, or absorbed through the skin.
Poison
A poison or venom of plant or animal origin.
Toxin
A specific toxin or poisonous secretion of an animal, most commonly from a snake, spider, or scorpion, usually transmitted by a bite or sting.
Venom
The body’s physiological process of gradual adjustment to changes in altitude. (Term also can be used for adjustment to light or temperature.)
Acclimatization
A medical condition that is caused by exposure to high altitude.
Acute mountain sickness (AMS)
Any type of illness caused by exposure to high altitude.
Altitude illness
Uncoordinated muscle movements; at high altitudes, it is associated with high-altitude cerebral edema.
Ataxia
A portable hyperbaric chamber that is used to treat altitude illness.
Gamow bag
A potentially deadly condition in which the brain swells in individuals at high altitude.
High-altitude cerebral edema (HACE)
A condition in which fluid accumulates in the lungs of individuals at high altitude.
High-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE)
Insufficient oxygenation of the blood.
Hypoxemia
A dry, persistent cough caused by inhaling excessively cold, dry air that is typical at high altitude; also known as high-altitude bronchitis and “dry hack cough”.
Khumbu cough
