what causes different elements
atoms having different numbers of protons in their nucleus
what are the most abundant chemicals in biology
carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorus
what is a covelant bond
when two atoms share a pair of electrons
what is an ionic bond
the electrostatic attraction between two oppositely charged ions
calcium ion

phosphate ions
cell membrane formation, atp formation, nucleic acid formation, bone formation
hydroxide ions
catalysis of reactions, ph determination
What causes a polar molecule
In a covelant bond, electrons are not always shared equally. The atom with the greater share is slightly negative and the other slightly positive.
What is a hydrogen bond
The interaction of polar molecules due to the attraction of positive and negative regions
Characteristics of a hydrogen bond
- weak
- high in numbers
- constantly form and reform
