CH10 types of variation Flashcards
1
Q
Variation
A
- the differences in characteristics between organisms
2
Q
Interspecific variation
A
- type of variation between members of different species
3
Q
Intraspecific variation
A
- type of variation between organisms of the same species
4
Q
Causes of variation
A
- an organisms genetic material
- the environment in which an organism lives
5
Q
Alleles - variation
A
- Genes have different alleles, and with a gene for a particular characteristic, alleles produce different effects
- Individuals in a species may inherit different alleles of a gene
6
Q
Mutations - variation
A
- changes to the dna sequence and genes can lead to changes in the proteins coded for
- These protein changes can affect physical and metabolic characteristics
- If a mutation occurs in gamete’s it may be passed on to the organisms offspring
7
Q
meiosis - variation
A
- independent assortment and crossing over
8
Q
Sexual reproduction - variation
A
- offspring produced from two individuals inherits genes from each of the parents
9
Q
Chance - variation
A
- many different gametes are produced from the parental genome
- During sexual reproduction, it is down to chance which two combine
10
Q
Examples of characteristics caused by environment variation
A
- scars
