CH12 management of disease Flashcards
1
Q
Penicillin
A
- first widely used, effective, safe antibiotic
- comes from penicillium chrysogenum
- discovered by alexander flemming in 1928
2
Q
How do scientists design drugs
A
- use complex computer programmes
- Build up three dimensional models of key molecules in body and their antigen systems
- Models of potential drug molecules can be built up
3
Q
Where do most drugs come from
A
- derived from or based on bioactive compounds discovered in plants, microorganisms or other forms of life
4
Q
Why is loss of biodiversity bad
A
- scientists have not yet explored and identified all life on earth
- Some plants, animals or microorganisms could give key to lifesaving drug
5
Q
What is pharmacogenetics
A
- Science of interweaving knowledge of drug actions with personal genetic material
- human genome can be analysed giving an understanding of genetic basis of diseases
6
Q
Example of pharmacogenetics
A
- 30% of all breast cancers have mutation in HER2 gene
- Activity of this gene can be shut down by specific drugs
7
Q
What is synthetic biology
A
- Using techniques of genetic engineering to develop populations of bacteria to produce much needed drugs that would otherwise be too rare to get
8
Q
Example of synthetic biology
A
- mammals have been genetically modified to produce much needed therapeutic proteins in their milk
