Ch.14 Cryosurgery Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 2 main mechanisms of tissue injury from freezing
A
Immediate
Delayed
2
Q
What ocurs in the immediate mechanism
A
- Direct injury to cells caused by ice crystal formation
- Hyperosmotic environment
- Dehydrates cells
- Increased electrolyte conc
- pH changes
- Crystals disrupt organelles & cell membranes
immediate cell death
Thawing at -20 -25c ice crystals fuse - *recrystallization * - disrupt cell membranes
With thawing water enters cells - burst
3
Q
What occurs in the delayed mechanism
A
After thawing
Progressive microcirculation failure and vascular stasis
increased permeability of cell wall, edema, platelt aggregation, microthrombus
4
Q
Temps req for cell death
A
-20c for 1 min
-30 -40 for 1 min for cancer cells
5
Q
Temp of N2O gas
A
-89 C / -127 F
6
Q
Temp of liquid nitrogen
A
-196 C /-320.4 f
