What are the 5 vascular changes during inflammation?
- Localized edema
- Brief vasoconstriction
- Increased vascular permeability
- Plasma leakage into tissues
- Vasodilation
What is the first line of defense against microorganisms?
Physical barriers (skin, mucous membranes, etc.). & Mechanical Barriers (vomiting, coughing, etc.) This is INNATE immunity
What happens when mast cells are activated?
They release chemicals that initiate inflammatory response- either immediately by degranulation or more slowly by synthesis of inflammatory mediators.
What is the third line of defense called?
Adaptive/Acquired immunity
What are other terms for innate immunity?
Natural or native immunity
Why is fever associated with inflammation?
Cytokines, which are inflammatory chemicals, cause fever.
What makes an acute sprained ankle swell up?
The injured tissue calls on chemical messengers to act on nearby vessels, which expand and increase blood flow to injured site. Leaky vessels allow fluid to leak into tissue and cause swelling.
