Precontemplation
no intention of changing, do not intend to change within 6 months; use subtle education and information in small piece, find out what they think about exercise, dispel myths
Contemplation
thinking about changing within next 6 months; use information/education and social proof (similar clients), understand their pros and cons, address their cons
Preparation
planning to change within 1 month, already exercising occasionally, believe in benefits but may have unrealistic expectations; clarify realistic goals and expectations, ask about previous experience, discuss building social support, ease into program
Action
most clients; has been doing behavior for less than 6 months; continue education, strengthen beliefs, discuss barriers and upcoming obstacles, redesign program if needed
Maintenance
has been doing behavior for over 6 months; have a maintenance check-in plan to discuss progress, might expand on goals
SMART goals
specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, time-bound
Social facilitation
people increase effort and performance when others are watching
Instrumental support
tangible, practical things like transportation and childcare
Companionship support
people to exercise with
Social physique anxiety
overemphasize difference between own body and others’
Behavioral strategies
aim to change actions and behavior; self-management, goal-setting, self-monitoring
Cognitive strategies
aim to change attitude; positive self-talk, psyching up, imagery
Exercise imagery
process created to produce internalized experiences to support or enhance exercise participation
