CH 19 Flashcards
Virus
-an infectious particle consisting of genes packaged in a protein coat
Capsid
-the protein shell that encloses the viral genome
Viral envelopes
-surround the capsids of influenza viruses and many other viruses found in animals
-derived from membranes of host cells
Bacteriophages/phages
-are viruses that infect bacteria
-have an elongated capsid head
Host Range
-a limited number of host cells that it can infect
Lytic Cycle
-a phage replicative cycle that culminates in the death of the host cell
virulent phage
-A phage that reproduces only by the lytic cycle
lysogenic cycle
-replicates the phage genome without destroying the host
temperate phages
-Phages that use both the lytic and lysogenic cycles
prophage
-integrated viral DNA
restriction enzymes
-cellular enzymes that identify and cut up foreign DNA
Retroviruses
-RNA animal viruses with the most complicated replicative cycles
reverse transcriptase
-used to copy their RNA genome into DNA
HIV (human immunodeficiency virus)
-is the retrovirus that causes AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome)
provirus
-viral DNA that is integrated into the host genome
