collection of vaginal secretion specimens
pelvic examination use speculum and swab to collect secretion
kept at room temp.
ph should be 3.8-4.5
wet mount examination
suspend specimen in saline and identify clumping and secretions (RBCs, WBCs, yeast, etc.)
amine test
add 1 drop of 10% KOH and check for fishy smell (whiff test)
KOH preparation and examination
detects fungal elements
bacterial vaginos
–> clue cells (bacterial infection)
overgrowth of normal flora
–> foul-smelling thin mucosa
greater than 4.5 pH
candidiasis
over proliferation of candida albicans
–> decreased pH, itching
trichomoniasis
parasitic infection (sexually transmitted)
–> jerking movements
yellow green frothy mucosa
atrophic vaginitis
thinning of vaginal epithelium and decreased glycogen production
–> leads to decrease in lactobacilli
no discharge (5-7 pH)
