What age are cervical smears offered?
25-64
How often are cervical smears offered?
25-49 - 3 yearly
50-64 - 5 yearly
HIV = annual
How often post partum are smears offered?
3 months
How is the smear done?
Brush the head of cervix and place into liquid based cytology
What are the advantages of liquid based cytology?
Reduced rate of inadequate smears
Increased sensitivity
Increased specificity
What is the action if the result is normal?
Place on routine recall
What is the action if the result is inadequate?
Insufficient material
Repeat smear as soon as convenient
If 3 consecutive inadequate smears, refer for colposcopy
What is the action if the result is borderline/mild dyskaryosis?
Check HPV status
HPV positive - refer for colposcopy
HPV negative - return to routine recall
What is the action if the result is moderate dyskaryosis?
Refer for colposcopy
What is the action if the result is severe dyskaryosis?
Refer for colposcopy
