What is cervical ectropion?
Eversion of the endocervix
What happens in cervical ectropion?
Exposure of the columnar epithelium of the endocervix to the vaginal environment
Columnar epithelium is more fragile than the stratified squamous epithelium of the ectocervix
What is cervical ectropion associated with?
High levels of oestrogen
What are features of cervical ectropion?
Mostly asymptomatic
Post-coital bleeding
Dyspareunia
Increased discharge/bleeding
What is seen on speculum examination with cervical ectropion?
Normal epithelium = pink
Everted epithelium = red
Transformation zone = where it meets
How is cervical ectropion investigated?
Swabs if infection suspected
Cervical smear/colposcopy
How is cervical ectropion managed?
Stop oestrogen products
Columnar epithelium can be ablated
