cerebral cortex Flashcards
cerebral cortex
largest division in the brain. it si divided into two hemispheres, each of which is divided into four lobes
occipital lobe
at the back of head, functions include: many aspects of vision
temporal lobe
around the ears
-functions include: hearing
parietal lobe
top, rear of the lobe
-functions include: attention, spatial location, somatosensory control
frontal lobe
front of the brain
-planning, memory search, motor control
phineas gage
-stake went through his head
-stake went under left eye and out through his frontal lobe
-this changed his temper, he became short tempered
somatosensory strip
front of parietal lobe
motor strip
rear of the frontal lobe
where are the somatosensory strip and motor strip in relation to each other
next to each other
front strip is motor, back strip is sensory
the motor cortex is in the frontal lobe, the somatosensory strip is in the parietal lobe
association areas that process infromation
broca’s area, wernicke’s area
what area produces speech?
broca’s area
what area makes sense of speech?
wernicke’s area
left hemisphere
right side of body
language, speech, reading, writing, logic, math, science, interpretation of events
right hemisphere
left side of body
spacial relations, creativity, music and art, inference, fantasy, makes inferences, helps orchestrate self awarness
corpus callosum
people with split collusms are able to have split functions with each side of the brain, so there two sides can act different since they arent communitcating as much
behavioral genetics
field of research that stufies genetics & how it contributes to, influences, & is influenced by individual differences in behavior
chromosomes
threadlike structures made of DNA molecules that contain genes
deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)
molecule that contains genes
gene
stretch of DNA that produces specific protein
- Can be active or inactive
* Environmental events & choices can turn genes “on” or “off”
inheritance
the joint action of combinations of genes
working together
twin studies
monozygotic (identical twins)
dizygotic (fraternal twins)
