case 6 - self management Flashcards
what is self management
the process of actively engaging in self-care activities with the goals of improving one’s behaviours and wellbeing
why is self management important in diabetes
T2DM is challenging to manage
Integrating complex self-management regimens into daily life can cause high emotional distress, anxiety, depression and reduce wellbeing
Maintaining good glycemic control can reduce complications associated with diabetes
how can physical activity help
regularly exercising helps to lower blood glucose levels, reduce blood pressure, maintain a healthy weight and promotes feelings of better well-being and mental health. Current advice from diabetes suggests that people with diabetes should aim to do at least 30 minutes of exercise (e.g., walking, cycling, swimming) five times a week.
how can eating behaviours help
the changes individuals have to make to their eating behaviours varies and losing weight may be important if the person is overweight or obese.
