Case 2 - smoking Flashcards
1
Q
what protects the oesophagus from GERD
A
the oesophageal sphincter - muscular valve that keeps fluids in your stomach
2
Q
what does smoking do to this sphincter
A
it weakens this sphincter - allows stomach acid to flow into the oesophagus and damage it
3
Q
how does smoking increase the amount of stomach acid
A
smoking triggers more acid production inside the stomach, increasing the risk of acid reflex into the oesophagus
smoking promotes the transfer of bile salts from the intestines into the stomach, thereby concentrating the stomach acids
