Cardiovascular System Flashcards
Functions of Blood
- removes waste products from organs and tissue
- regulates body temp by distributing
- clotting prevents a loss of blood cells and body fluids
- acts as a vehicle (for taking hormones to organs or tissues)
- aids in the defence against the invasions of micro-organisms
- transportation of nutrients
- transport respiratory gases (such as oxygen)
Steps in formation of the blood clot
1) vascular - rapid constriction of the vessel to decrease and flow
2) Platelet - clumps together to adhere to injure vessels and form a plug
3) Coagulation factors are released, a blood clot is formed and seals off damaged portion
4) Clot retraction - bleeding stopped, clot retracts and brings torn edges closer together
5) Fibrinolysis - final repair of injured vessel, clot breaks up and cells carry out further repair
