Capillary Exchange Flashcards
Capillary adaptations due to Ficks Law (3)
1) Large conc gradient = (Constant blood flow through capillaries)
2) Large area available for diffusion = (Many capillaries supply the same tissue)
3) Short diffusion distance (Endothelium = one layer thick)
How is resistance reduced?
One capillary has relatively large resistance (reduced due to lots of capillaries)
Name sterlings laws? (4)
Blood Hydrostatic Pressure
Blood Colloid Pressure
Interstitial Hydrostatic Pressure
Interstitial Colloid Pressure
Blood Hydrostatic Pressure?
Pressure exerted by blood against capillary wall
PUSHES fluid OUT of capillary
Blood Colloid Pressure?
Pressure exerted by proteins in the blood against capillary wall (mostly albumin)
Usually too large to diffuse into interstitium
PULLS fluid INTO capillary
Interstitial Hydrostatic Pressure?
Pressure of fluid in interstitium
PUSHES fluid INTO capillary
Interstitial Colloid Pressure
Pressure of proteins in interstitium
PULLS fluid OUT of capillary
