C6 Prescription of exercise for health Flashcards
Outline physical activity guidelines for the promotion of good health
World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends for minimal levels of physical activity in the promotion of good health for three specific groups
Health recommendation from 5-17 year olds
- at least 60 min of moderate - to - vigorous intensity physical activity per day
- most activity should be aerobic. Vigorous-intensity activities should be incorporated (3 times per week)
- additional activities with more than 60 mins daily will provide additional health benefits
Health recommendation from 18-64 years old
- 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic physical activity throughout the week (or at least 75 min)
- aerobic activity should be performed in bouts of at least 10 min duration
- muscle strengthening activities should be done involving major muscle groups on two or more days
Health recommendation for those aged 65 years and above
- at least 150 min of moderate - intensity aerobic physical activity (or at least of vigorous 75min)
- Aerobic activity should be performed in bouts of at least 10 min duration
-muscle strengthening activities should be done involving major muscle groups on two or more days - adults with poor mobility should perform physical activity to enhance balance and prevent falls on three or more days per week
Describe the aims of exercise in individuals with a hypo kinetic disease
->to make the most of limited functional capacities
-> to alleviate or provide relief from symptoms
-> to reduce the need for medication
-> to reduce the risk of disease recurrence
-> to help overcome social problems and psychological distress
Discuss the potential barriers to physical activity
-> Physical ( perceptions of being to old or too fat)
-> Emotional ( shyness, embarrassment)
->Motivational (lack of energy for or enjoyment of exercise )
->Time ( lack of time due to work or family life)
->Availability (perceptions, lack of equipment, facilities and the feeling that there is no one to exercise with)
- uncontrolled disease state (unstable angina, poorly
-controlled diabetes, uncontrolled hypertension)
- hazards of exercise
-musco-skeletal injuries
-triggering of other health issues (heart attack, respiratory tract infections)
