1.2.1 - the muscular system Flashcards
What are the characteristics common to muscle tissue?
Contractibility
Extensibility
Elasticity
Atrophy
Hypertrophy
Nerve stimuli
Fed by capillaries
What is contractibility?
The ability of the muscle to contract and generate force when it is stimulated by a nerve
What is extensibility?
The ability of the muscle to extend beyond its normal resting state
What is elasticity?
The muscle’s ability to return to its original resting length
What is atrophy?
Muscle wastage, it is caused by a lack of physical activity, poor nutrition, and disease
What is hypertrophy?
Growth and increase in size of muscle most commonly as a result of weight training
What is nerve stimuli?
A nerve sends a signal to the muscle telling it to contract
What is fed by capillaries?
Gaseous exchange occurs in the capillaries so oxygen can be delivered to the muscles
