C6 - Electrolysis Flashcards
electrolysis
breakdown of a substance by electricity
electrolyte
compound that is broken down
-either molten/dissolved
anode
+ electrode
electrode
-rods that conduct electricity
cathode
- electrode
cation
+ve ion
anion
-ve ion
why are electrodes made from unreactive metals
so they do not react with the product made
during electrolysis, what happens to ions at electrodes
-cations move towards the cathode
-anions move towards the anode
-opposites attract
when ions reach electrodes
they lose charge
- become elements
what happens to metal below hydrogen on the reactivity series
they are deposited in the aqueous solution
what happens if 2 products are made at the electrodes
less reactive one is deposited
if halide ions are present
the halogen is always formed
cryolite
reduces melting point of aluminium oxide
-less energy is used
-melting point become 850.c
why do carbon anodes need to be replaced regularly
as o2 reacts to form co2
-they wear away after awhile
