C2.6 - The Transition elements. Flashcards
1
Q
Physical properties of transition elements
A
- good conductors of heat/electricity
- hard and strong
- high density
- high melting points (except mercury which is a liquid)
2
Q
Chemical properties of transition elements
A
- much less reactive than alkali metals
- do not react as easily with oxygen/water than alkali metals do
- only reacts with other elements in the correct conditions
3
Q
Reactions of the transition elements
A
- always form positive ions
- always form different coloured compounds
4
Q
Why do they form different coloured compounds
A
due to the different charges of the metal ions in the compound
5
Q
Copper (II) sulfate colour compound
A
- Cu+2
- blue compound
6
Q
nickel (II) carbonate colour of compound
A
pale green
7
Q
chromium (III) oxide colour of compound
A
dark green
8
Q
manganese (II) chloride colour of compound
A
pale pink
