What is the clinical presentation of breast disorders?
Pain - less than 2% have cancer
Palpable mass - cyst, benign tumours, cancers
Nipple discharge
Mammographic abnormality
What are examples of benign diseases?
Fibrocystic disease
Fat necrosis
Mastitis
What is fibrocystic disease?
- Very common
- Lumpiness
- Pain/tenderness
- Hormone related changes
- Cumulative process >30 years
- Calcification
What is fat necrosis?
Trauma to breast can result in localised haemorrhage and necrosis
Hard lump - mimics cancer
What is Mastitis
- inflammatory condition
- red, tender, warm
- blocked ducts location mastitis
- smoking
What are examples of benign breast tumours?
Fibroadenoma
Papilloma
What are examples of malignant breast tumours?
Ductal carcinoma
Lobular carcinoma
Paget’s disease
What is fibroadenoma?
Rubbery lumps
Benign - doesn’t need to be removed
Can increase in size during pregnancy
What is Papilloma?
Wart like growth
Bleeding nipple discharge
What is ductal carcinoma?
Abnormality of milk ducts
Pre-malignant condition
What is lobular carcinoma?
5-10% breast cancers involving the lymph node
What is Paget’s disease of the nipple?
- affects the skin of one nipple
- eczema type rash, bleeding
- sign of underlying breast cancer
