Bovine Nerves Flashcards
Describe the aetiology of radial paralysis
C7, C8 and T1 outflow
Motor inntervation of the carpus and digit extensors
Sensation to the lateral side of the limb is lost
Excessive traction on limb
Trauma to the scapulohumeral area
Recumbency
What are the clinical signs and presentation of radial paralysis?
Proximal nerve damage - limb held in flexion with elbow dropped. Cranial wall of the hoof scuffs the floor during locomotion
Distal nerve damage - carpus and fetlock held in flexion
Where does the suprascapular nerves exit the spin and what are the signs of paralysis of this nerve?
C6/C7
Limb abducts when weight bearing
Supra/infraspinatus atrophy
Where does the radial nerve exit the spin and what are the signs of paralysis of this nerve?
C7-8/T1
Flexed limb
Dropped elbow
Cranial hoof scuffs the floor
Where does the brachial plexus exit the spin and what are the signs of paralysis of this nerve?
C5/T2
No muscle control/tone in forelimb
Flaccid, non-weight bearing limb
Describe the aetiology of obturator paralysis
L4, L5, L6 outflow
Innervates the adductor muscles of the hindlimb
Dystocia due to foetal oversixe
What are the clinical signs of obturator paralysis?
Unilateral or bilateral
Inability to adduct the limb leading to abduction
Animals may slip causing severe abduction and trauma to the leg, hip and pelvis
What are the three types of treatment that you can use for nerve damage in cattle?
Anti-inflammatory drugs
Nursing care
Supportive dressings
