Bone and joint Flashcards
organism that can cause a sty of the eye
staph. aureus
Infectious process involving the various components of bone characterized by progressive inflammatory destruction of bone, necrosis and new bone formation
osteomyelitis
how is osteomyelitis happens?
hemtaogenous or contigous spread
most sensitive dx for osteomyelitis
MRI but it is very expensive
what do we wee in bone biopsy in osteomyelitis?
- abundant WBC and bony destruction
major pathogen in osteomyelitis
S. aureus
special pathogens in osteomyelitis:
- salmonella
- pasteurella multocida
- M. tuberculosis
- fungi
- salmonella- immunocompromised
- pasteurella multocida- cat bites
- M. tuberculosis- hematogenous spread during primary disease
- fungi- intravenous device infections or immunosuppression
septic arthritis
medical/surgical emergency due to the pus in the joint rapidly nad irreversibly destroys the joint (collagen has no blood supply thus it does not grow back)
pathogenesis of septic arthritis (3)
- hematogenous spread
- direct inoculation
- contigous infection
most common cause of septic arhritis
gram positive: s. aureus
less likely is N. gonorrheae
medical treatment of septic arhritis
for S.aureus use oxacillin
and for N.gonorrheae use ceftriaxone
is gonorrhea seen in joint fluid aspiration?
nope, we should to a urine test to confirm
