Body cavities Flashcards
what is the dorsal cavity
cavity that is subdivided into 2 other cavities that house the central nervous system
what is the cranial cavity
cavity within the dorsal cavity that contains the brain
CRANIAL = PERTAINING TO THE SKULL
what is the spinal cavity?
the cavity that contains the spinal cord
what lines the spinal and cranial cavities?
meninges - connective tissue that protects the organs inside these cavities
what organs are in the thoracic cavity?
lungs, larynx, esophagus, heart, and mediastinum
what organs are in the abdominopelvic cavity?
stomach, liver, small and large intestine, gallbladder, pancreas, reproductive organs
what separates the thoracic and abdominopelvic cavity?
the diaphram
what is the space between the lungs called?
mediastinum
what is the visceral pericardium?
Tissue that surrounds the heart
what is the parietal pericardium?
Tissue that lines the cavity wall around the heart that allows the heart to expand and contract within the space
what lines the abdominopelvic cavity?
peritoneum
what is the abdominal cavity?
cavity within the abdominopelvic cavity containing the digestive organs such as the stomach, liver, and intestines
what is the pelvic cavity?
cavity within the abdominopelvic cavity containing the reproductive organs such as the uterus in females, the urinary bladder, colon, rectum.

the lining of the organs in the abdominopelvic cavity
what is the parietal peritoneum?
The tissue lining the wall of the cavity.
located in the surface of the body wall
allows for such organs (stomach, intestine) to expand and contract
