Blood Collection/Venipuncture Flashcards
What is fasting?
Nothing but water for 8-12 hrs prior to testing
glucose and triglycerides (cholesterol) affects it
What is basal state?
Early morning specimen (after sleep), 12 hrs after the last ingestions of food or liquids
What is postprandial?
After a meal
What is hemaconcentration?
Abnormally high concentration of blood
What is hematoma?
A bad bruise; caused when blood collects and pools under the skin
What is hemolysis?
Rupturing of red blood cells
Order of Draw for Venipuncture
- yellow
- blue
- red
- mixed/gold
- green
- lavender
- gray
which additive is in the yellow tube?
what is it used for?
SPS
used for blood culture
What additive is in the blue tube?
What does the blue tube test for?
sodium citrate
used for coagulation testing, PT/INT, PTT
What additive is in the red tube?
what is it used for?
No additive if it’s in glass/ in plastic it’s silica
used for chemistry blood collections after centrifugation
What additive is in the mixed/gold tube?
what is it used for?
SST
used for chemistry testing/separating cells from serum
What additive is in the green tube?
what is it used for?
heparin
used for plasma samples/ chemistry testing such as liver/kidney function
What additive is in the lavender tube?
what is it used for?
EDTA
used for hematology such as HbA1C, CBC, ESR, hemoglobin, hematocrit
What additive is in the gray tube?
what is it used for?
sodium fluoride and potassium oxalate
used for glucose and alcohol blood collections
What is centrifuging?
Blood tubes are rotated at a high rate of speed causing heavier elements to be pulled to the bottom
