Block 3 Flashcards
Immune-mediated inflammatory condition of the CNS
Granulomatous meningoencephalitis (GME)
What is bilateral inflammation of CN II?
Optic neuritis
What is optic neuritis a form of?
Granulomatous meningoencephalitis
What are the clinical findings of optic neuritis on a fundic exam?
Fuzzy halo forming around the cranial nerve
How do you diagnosis optic neuritis?
Spinal tap for CSF analysis
What surrounds the optic nerve?
Meninges and CSF
How do cats typically get optic neuritis?
How do dogs typically get optic neuritis?
Infectious cause (FIP)
Immune mediated
What is inflammation of the motor branches of CNV called?
Trigeminal neuritis
What clinical sign occurs with trigeminal neuritis?
Acute onset of inability to close the jaw
What age groups are normally affected by trigeminal neuritis
Middle aged to geriatric dogs
Why would the CSF generally be normal on a spinal tap of a dog with trigeminal neuritis (unlike optic neuritis)
Trigeminal nerve is a peripheral nerve while the optic nerve is very close to the brain and technically part of the brain
What is the most common nerve to develop a nerve sheath tumor?
Trigeminal
What is the malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor of CN V called?
Trigeminal nerve sheath tumor
What is a common symptom of trigeminal nerve sheath tumor?
Unilateral, chronic progressive atrophy of the masticate ray muscles
What is the difference between trigeminal neuritis and trigeminal nerve sheath tumor?
Trigeminal neuritis is acute and bilateral
Trigeminal nerve sheath tumor is unilateral
