Behavioral Health Flashcards
what field is behavioral health in?
interdisciplinary
what 4 characteristics does the application of behavioral health help aid in?
prevention
diagnosis
treatment
rehabilitation
overview of behavioral health
national
- health campaigns
group
- for people with chronic conditions already motivated to look to groups with support
- unique opportunity to connect people for support
individual
- patient treated for single or multiple behaviors
behavioral health aims to preserve health and prevent illness through ______ _________
lifestyle changes
goal for managing chronic illnesses in behavioral health
increase quality of life and better treatment
not necessarily to cure illness
biopsychosocial model for behavioral health
psychological
social
biological
- traditional medication
- health = absence of disease
- disease = presence of something
disease vs. illness
d - biomedical model, always explained by abnormal biological processes
i - biopsychosocial model, explained by the interaction between biological, social and psychological factors
what is the short-term goal in session length for behavioral health?
4-8 sessions
teachable moments for behavioral health
office visit for health screenings/preventive care
diagnosis of chronic medical condition
office visit for an acute health concern
when a patient expresses worry about a loved one’s health
work with people as they are, not as they _______ ___
should be
using SMART goals is a method of goal setting that: (three things)
increases the likelihood of reaching goals
anticipates and plans for barriers to reaching the goals
reinforces continued success by setting a progressive series of goals
what is a known pitfall of goal setting?
setting unachievable goals!
SMART goals stands for…
specific
measurable
- setting goal we can observe and a specific way to measure it
attainable (aka achievable)
- balance challenge with resources to achieve goal
realistic
time-limited
I want to get healthy vs. I want to begin an exercise plan is working on what part of SMART?
Specific
I want to exercise more vs. I want to exercise 30 minutes 3 times per week is working on what part of SMART?
measurable
I want to complete an ironman vs. I want to sign up for a couch-to-5k program is working on what part of SMART?
attainable
SMART: attainable vs. realistic
a - Can you do it
r - will you do it
I want to run outside everyday vs. i want to incorporate movement into my day everyday is working on what part of SMART?
realistic
I want to lose 50 lbs vs. I want to follow my exercise goal for one month and check in on my progress is working on what part of SMART?
time-limited
2 reasons to set time-limited goals?
- goal met short term = good for reinforcement for future goal, while not met short term = changes need to be made
- make sure people aren’t setting goals outside of your control
- ex. get an internship is a bad goal, not in your control for them to pick you
what did the problem solving video of the two guys show?
response to small problems = give up and accept it
causing them to add up
step one in problem solving to promote treatment adherence
define the problem clearly
state the problem in terms of changes that are clear and achievable within persons control
step two in problem solving to promote treatment adherence
generate a wide range of responses
- obtain as many different responses as possible
- think outside the box
- do not consider pros/cons at this stage
- doing nothing is always an option
step three in problem solving to promote treatment adherence
evaluate pros/cons of each response
- how feasible is this response?
- what are the potential consequences of this response?
- what are the potential benefits of this response?
- would anything get in the way or make this response less effective?
step four in problem solving to promote treatment adherence
rank order of potential responses
- use list from step 3 to identify the response with the optimal pro/con balance
- when ranking solutions, emphasize feasibility in relation to potential benefits
step five in problem solving to promote treatment adherence
select and implement a response
- choose the highest rank response
- assist the patient in developing an action plan to implement the response
- the action plan should address exactly what the patient is going to do and when they are going to do it
step six in problem solving to promote treatment adherence
evaluate the response
- if a problem remains, return to the previous steps
clinicians should try to respond ____________ to patient disclosures of non-adherence
non-judgementally
what mentality does the clinician want to adopt when address patient’s experience
investigator mentality!
- understand the why and learn why this is happening
activity scheduling in behavioral health
- chronic illness can interfere with patients’ abilities to engage in pleasurable or valued activities
- decreased engagement can contribute to
- depression and anxiety
- social isolation and lower quality of life
- difficulties with treatment adherence and worsening of medical symptoms
the disability spiral
thoughts
- “I have to stay in bed and rest when I hurt”
behaviors
- stay in bed, watch TV, stop socializing
emotions
- sadness, depression, anger
physical sensations
- pain/making it worse
repeat!
4 steps in activity scheduling
- identify pleasurable or valued activities
- plan a specific time for the activity
- anticipate and problem-solve barriers
- monitor mood before and after
- begin to engage once we realize we feel better after
what does activity scheduling do?
disrupts disability spiral!
